Elsa Ascencio joined Jewitt McLuckie & Associates LLP in July 2017 as an articling student. She is a graduate of the University of Ottawa’s Common Law program. As the daughter of a labourer, Elsa has always been passionate for labour rights and community activism. While in law school, Elsa was involved with labour projects and community groups, such as the Latin American Law Students Association. Last summer, Elsa worked at the Centre of Spanish Speaking Peoples Legal Clinic (“CSSP”) in Toronto as a Public Interest Fellow. Many workers in the Latino community are exploited by their employers due to their language skills. At the CSSP, Elsa worked vigorously to inform workers in the Latino community about their rights under the Employment Standards Act and the Ontario Human Rights Code. She organized workshops within the community and participated in the “15 and Fairness” campaign.
Along with her work at the CSSP, Elsa was involved the Employment Insurance Litigation Clinic. She assisted individuals across Canada who were seeking to appeal their EI decision. Elsa gained experience in administrative tribunals and working with clients.
Elsa is excited to bring her experience and passion for labour rights to the Jewitt McLuckie & Associates team!
