Latest news: The SCC Continues to Protect Workers’ Rights under s.2(d)
Ben Welchner has been assisting workers in need since the beginning of his legal career. Ben started legal work in 2012, working as a research assistant at a small union-side labour firm. Since then, he has helped unions and workers with matters of unjust discipline, workplace harassment and claiming their rights under employment contracts, employment standards laws and collective agreements. Ben also works to help sick and injured workers fight back when their disability claims are denied. Ben has prepared seminar materials for public sector unions on workplace conflicts, privacy matters and drugs and alcohol in the workplace.
Before entering practice, Ben trained in the Ryerson Law Practice Program. Aside from honing his legal and advocacy skills, Ben was trained in alternative dispute resolution and interest-based negotiation.
Ben obtained his juris doctor degree from Dalhousie Law School in 2017, winning the Edna Chambers Judicial Remedies Prize for his year. Ben also received an Honours BA in psychology from the University of Ottawa in 2014.
In his spare time, Ben has volunteered with physically and mentally disabled children and adults with the Therapeutic Riding Association of Ottawa-Carleton. Ben is a hobbyist computer programmer and artist.
