Alycia Shaw joined Jewitt McLuckie & Associates LLP in February of 2016. Prior to joining JM&A, Alycia worked at the largest private sector union local and the largest union in Canada. She represented public and private sector locals at grievance arbitrations and administrative tribunals on a wide range of matters. Alycia also advised on strategic collective agreement administration and was the bargaining spokesperson for collective agreement negotiations in the long-term care and social services sectors. She facilitated training workshops for union representatives and local members on a wide range of topics such as: preparing for arbitration, understanding the arbitration process, and the duty to accommodate.
Prior to attending law school, Alycia obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Labour Studies, and a Master of Arts in Labour Studies from McMaster University. During her graduate studies, she was an active CUPE Local 3906 member and a Teaching Assistant in the Labour Studies Department. Alycia obtained her J.D. from the University of Ottawa in 2011. During law school, Alycia was a Research Assistant to the Vice-Dean, active in Pro Bono Students Canada and an Executive Member of the Asian Law Students Association and the Canadian Lawyers Association for International Human Rights.
Alycia’s labour practice includes representing a wide range of public sector workers including municipal, education, social services and university faculty workers in all aspects of labour law including unjust terminations and unfair labour practice complaints. She also represents the staff of provincial and federal unions. Her employment practice includes wrongful dismissal litigation as well as human rights complaints. She also practices long-term disability litigation, fighting insurance companies that deny benefits to workers. Alycia has a particular interest in workplace harassment issues and has represented workers at all stages of the investigation process. Alycia has appeared before Arbitration Boards, the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario, the Ontario Labour Relations Board, the Canadian Industrial Relations Board, the Ontario and Superior Courts of Justice, and the Ontario Court of Appeal.
Alycia is currently a member of the Canadian Association of Labour Lawyers and an active member of the Federation of Asian Canadian Lawyers.
Alycia is an active member of her community, currently sitting on the board of iSisters Technology Mentoring and volunteering with the Parkdale Food Centre. Alycia enjoys an active lifestyle and aspires to hike the world’s best trails, most recently hiking the Wild Pacific Trail on Vancouver Island.
