On March 9, our newest associate, Jaime Lefebvre (profile page coming soon!), participated in the Canadian Association of Refugee Lawyers (CARL) Lobbycon. At Lobbycon lawyers mentor law students on how to lobby Members of Parliament. This year they tackled two issues:
- The need for a simple pathway to citizenship for children in foster care; and
- Promoting family reunification by repealing regulation 117(9)(d), which is a draconian provision that prevents otherwise eligible family members from being sponsored because they were left off a form.
Jaime was very proud at how well the law students did! They prepared how to speak to the MPs on the two issues, including dealing with difficult questions. Each presented the positions, proposed actions the MPs could take and asked direct questions about whether the MPs would take any steps to support either proposition.
